Farms
Farming is a sector of vital importance in the supply chain and for the company itself, which in fact was established when the first farm was set up by the Vissani brothers in the early Fifties, and subsequently expanded with the addition of other production areas and diverse business fields. Saipa farms are all located in the provinces of Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, and are managed by the "La Cisterna" farming cooperative, which handles the butchering of all its meat.
The chickens are barn-raised and fed using OGM free feeds, in full respect with all legal requirements. In doing so we put all measures needed to safeguard the animal's wellbeing in terms of light, air and bedding into practice. In total there are around twenty warehouses, each of which contains from 3,000 to 4,000 chickens; organic chickens and turkeys are also reared in them, the latter being exclusively organic. The cockerels are kept in dedicated areas separate from the chickens. All the poultry is sold by the "La Cisterna" farm cooperative.
The pigs are entirely farmed in a closed supply chain: from fertilisation of the sows to birth of the piglets in the sow pens and their subsequent move to fattening pens (in various locations – Corridonia, Montecassiano and Offida – not least as a means of dealing with liquid manure disposal), and all the pigs are fed with our own non-GM feeds; after slaughtering, the "La Cisterna" farm cooperative sells on the fresh meat, or supplies it to Saipa for producing its cured meats and hams typical of the Marche area.
The cows: calves are bought and fattened up using our own-produced OGM free feeds, and are then slaughtered and sold on by the "La Cisterna" farm cooperative as fresh meat in the numerous shops it owns.
